Discover how ChatGPT impacts SEO and drives conversions. Learn why Bing Webmaster Tools is essential for optimizing your site for AI-driven traffic.
David: Last week we had a conversation about ChatGPT search engine and how it relates to Bing Webmaster Tools. Since we talked last week, Sam Altman, founder of ChatGPT, was on an AMA on Reddit. It was on the SEO subreddit, and they were basically talking about SEO for ChatGPT. He confirmed, continuing our conversation from last week, that Bing is at least one of the sources of crawlers for ChatGPT. So, what we talked about last week is the idea that if we want to be found by ChatGPT as a search engine for our clients, we should probably start paying really close attention to Bing. And at the very, very least, we should start setting up Bing Webmaster Tools for all of our clients. Because there’s data in there that could potentially tell us if there’s a problem like, “OMG, ChatGPT is not able to access.” We want it to access, right? Or what pages are indexed or what pages Bing won’t index because it’s pulling from the index. Now, there are other tools they said and did not mention besides Bing that they’re using. But we do know Bing is one of them. So, if that’s of interest to you, it’s worth the time to set up Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing Web Tools is free. It’s easy. The only downside to Bing Webmaster Tools that I’ve encountered is that if we set up our Search Console like we like to do in our community, which is by the DNS, you can’t automatically verify the site with Bing Webmaster Tools. So, one of the really cool things about Bing Master Tools is you log in and you say, okay, Bing, here are all the sites I have verified in Google Search Console. I would like the same data on these sites in Bing. So, you just go, boop, boop, boop, boop, boop. And it gives you access to all those sites.
Tricia: Okay.
David: But if you’ve done it on the domain registrar level, your site won’t appear in the Bing list, which means you either have to go in and add Bing Webmaster Tools on the DNS level, or you verify it through your Yoast SEO plugin, where you can add the code in your Yoast, and now you can verify it that way.
Tricia: Okay.
David: That’s the only downside. Honestly. And there’s so much great information. We’ve talked about Bing Webmaster Tools before the link-building tools, the keyword research tools. It’s like, my goodness, why are we not using this amazing free tool.
Stephanie: Yeah, I probably only have it set up for half of my clients.
David: Right, right.
Tricia: It’s on my list to start going through and doing on all of them. I’ve got one that I’m going to start working on this week. But I am going to have that issue. All of mine are domain properties, so I’ll have to…
David: But if you’re using Yoast, it’s really easy to go in and verify by putting the code in.
Tricia: Yeah.
David: It’s really easy. I have a lot of clients that are not even on WordPress, so they don’t have Yoast.
Tricia: Yeah, yeah. The one that I’m working with, that I’m thinking about starting on, does not use Yoast, so I’ll have to figure it out.
David: Right.
Tricia: I think he has access to DNS, so I can just have him add on DNS.
David: Yeah
Tricia: I’ve got to look at… It’s just been a while since I’ve dug into it, but once I have myself set up, I can add the business to it as well? Their email? Is it like Google Search Console?
David: Oh, that’s an interesting question. So, how do you grant someone else access?
Tricia: Yeah, because obviously, if I’m looking at it, I want the business to, as well.
David: I’ve kept the data to myself. That’s a good question. I don’t know. I mean, you know. Yeah, it’s worth looking at. I don’t know offhand.
Tricia: Yeah, I’m going to look at it and see.
Stephanie: I’m logging in. Y’all keep talking. I’ll log in and see if I can figure it out.
Tricia: Okay. Thanks, Stephanie.
David: So, one of the other questions we asked is, did you look and see if any of your… Oh, because this is what brought this up for those of you who weren’t here last week. We have all kinds of tracking set up on conversions for my clients. One of my clients got a lead, and the source of the lead was ChatGPT. It was an automated source, so we knew it was accurate. And so that forced me into Google Analytics and to look for referrals from ChatGPT. And not only did I see that lead, but I saw another two more leads that came from ChatGPT, and a whole bunch of visits to the site from ChatGPT. When I say whole bunch, I mean like five. So not really a whole bunch. I’m exaggerating. That still made me go, oh yeah, wow, this is before the search engine even showed up. I better start paying attention to this. So, I wanted to put our heads together and look at our Google Analytics for referring traffic from ChatGPT to see if any of our clients are getting it, too. Even better, one of my clients got three customers from ChatGPT, which is the whole point. Right? So, did you look at your data and see anything?
Tricia: I have one that has a conversion.
David: Wow. Yeah.
Tricia: I actually had a call with him, and I was talking to him about it. He’s in the process of having his website redone, and it was interesting to be able to show him that.
David: Yeah, I fear showing clients because I know the next question is how do I get more?
Tricia: Well, that’s what I told him. I said, “I’m just showing you because I think it’s interesting. But we don’t want to really gear and change things for Chat GPT.”
David: Well, I think that if someone I knew was building a new website who got leads from ChatGPT in the past, I’d use this to remind them, number one, don’t cut corners on your content. Have a real writer do it. Don’t AI your content. ChatGPT does not want to use AI content to serve up AI answers. And so, this is a great data driven example of I know you’re going to be asked to write a lot of pages, take the time and do it right. Two, lots of content, lots of words. Make it unique and helpful and interesting. Answer questions people are asking like people are asking ChatGPT questions. Provide the answer and you’ll become the source. Right? Blogs are super important. Every website from this point forward needs a blog. I mean you’ve really got to do it. I know that it’s hard. I fight my clients all the time on writing blog posts. Gotta do it. Maybe you don’t want traffic from ChatGPT. I mean what strikes me is that your client and my client got leads. The volume of traffic to leads means the conversion rate off ChatGPT is incredibly high.
